The two Half-Life 1 expansions were awesome, especially Opposing Force. Opposing Force is comparable in quality to HL1 itself. You can't get either expansion on Half-Life Source at the moment, though. There are mods that are converting the expansions to Source in the works, but you should really just get the anthology. As others have said, GoldSrc Half-Life is better overall for several reasons and supports 1080p as well as high FOVs. Plus there are some seriously good HL1 GoldSrc mods out there like Focal Point, Point of View or Azure Sheep that are almost as good as the official expansions.
Generally I find that my complaints aren't things that most people even noticed about the game, or even cared if they did, but I'll read out my biggest issues anyways. Too many things are retconned in from Half-Life 2, the biggest being Isaac Kleiner. Again, most people wouldn't care about this or would like it, but considering my extremist views on that topic I disagree: I want Half-Life to stay Half-Life and Half-Life 2 to stay Half-Life 2. I bundle Black Mesa in with Half-Life 2 because it is clearly catering to that sort of audience. There are so many small things that were changed for seemingly no reason. Maximum ammo levels being lowered for some weapons, mainly the MP5, small or big changes in the level design, e.g.
Cutting out the vent maze in chapter 5 and completely removing almost every side area in chapter 8, and also small changes to the dialogue that only someone who's played the game as obsessively as I have would notice. The last big gripe I have is audio design.
When I play Half-Life I crank up the audio. The ambient noises in that game are amazing. The voice acting, especially with the security guards, was great and really made me relate to the characters. In Black Mesa: Source I just can't say the same thing. The quality and the number of ambient noises dropped significantly, and the voice actors didn't live up to the professional standards at Valve. And as a side note, they released the game on Steam before finishing Xen, and then once they made money off of it they just started working on the dead multiplayer mode instead. Who knows when Xen will ever come out. Hell, it's not like I care, though, they'll probably fuck that up so horribly I won't even want to play it anyways.
